The UK Golf Open Championship (also known as the British Open or simply The Open) is the oldest golf major championship and the third annual major. It is held each year in the middle of July and placed between the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. The current holder of the trophy is Jordan Spieth who won last year with a score of 268.
This golf major is administered by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, one of the leading and most prestigious golf clubs in the world. The R&A is based in Fife, Scotland. Every year, the British Open is played on a different course in Scotland, with the 2018 edition to be held at Carnoustie Golf Links in Argus from 18-22 July.
The field for the British open is 156 players, with most of the favorites entering the tournament through exemptions. The other players can gain their spot in a variety of ways including qualification through the so-called “Open Qualifying Series”. The series consists of 10 specific golf tournaments including the PGA Tour, The Australasian Tour, the Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour as well.
The prize money for the British Open was low in the 1990s but started rising around 2002, reaching the highest prize fund in 2015 (£6.3 million). The fund was even higher in 2016, while in 2017 it was denominated to dollars for the first time in history. The total prize was $10.25 million, leaving the tournament trailing behind the Masters and the U.S. Open.
